In response to your messages regarding the recently uploaded charges, I see this as a call to duty and proper stewardship as I stand in the gap as your representative.
As reported earlier, the issue of school charges has undergone several reviews. To a reasonable extent, the union was involved, and we actively participated in the engagement with the University administration. Components of the school charges that are being considered as a basis for the increment were examined, and what we currently have is undoubtedly a true reflection of the product of our engagement. The rates available on our various portals, depending on programs and faculties, stem from our engagement with the University administration. While it may seem that we have not yet reached our goals, this perception is largely due to our expectations. However, we have all come to accept the reality of the operational costs necessary to keep our University running.
The current challenges in the educational sector are not exceptions for our University; we are all in this together. The government, recognizing the implications of the current economic situation, has indicated that we can explore the Nigeria Student Loan Fund (NELFUND) to help manage our expenses. I urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity as citizens of Nigeria, specific instructions on how to apply for NELFUND were early circulated by the Union. However, if anyone requires information or clarification, do not hesitate to reach out to us, we are always ready to serve you and respond swiftly to your calls.
During one of our engagements with the University administration, we were shocked to learn that roughly 270 million naira is required monthly to cover the electricity bill, while the Federal government has provided only 10 million naira for this purpose. Issues of epileptic internet connections and the provision of potable water were equally debated with assurances of improvements as we navigate these challenges together. We have advocated for a review of certain components of the charges, such as the endowment and caution fees, which were positively adjusted.
It is our hope that the services which the present situation of the country is now making us pay heavily for be adequately provided, alleviating the burden this fees regime imposes on our members.
We are united in this moment.
Signed:
AGEZEH, Victor Oghenetega
